CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — The U.S. Department of Commerce has awarded $600,000 to a program at West Virginia University that assists small and midsize U.S. manufacturing companies.

U.S. Sens. Joe Manchin and Shelley Moore Capito announced the funds from the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

The award is for the Hollings Manufacturing Extension Partnership, which provides technical assistance and other services to manufactures to help increase jobs and profits, according to a news release from the senators.

The program “has helped small West Virginia manufacturers create sustainable jobs and provide opportunities for growth through technology and innovation for several decades,” said Manchin, a Democrat.

Capito, a Republican, said the program “helps bridge the gap between small manufacturers by increasing product development, access to national markets, and utilizing emerging technologies.”
